Set a moving date early is the best advice we can give.

The date of your move is very often the most difficult thing to organise and agree on. Without doubt it is the most important thing after agreeing on the sale or purchase of your home. Ensuring you have this date set and contracts exchanged at least 2 weeks or more before you move will make your moving experience so much easier and give you plenty of time to get everything in place.

More and more often we see people exchanging contracts with only a few days before they are due to move and occasionally on the same day as the move. Allowing this to happen can see you struggle to get a professional mover that is free to move you. It can also leave you without utilities like broadband after you move. We strongly recommend that if it is possible to, avoid this! It almost always causes problems for you and leaves no time to find a solution.

Moving house can be an emotional roller coaster, with a range of ups and downs.

  • Emotional turbulenceMoving house can cause a range of emotions, including anxiety, difficulty making decisions, feeling disorganized, feeling unable to focus and dont forget stress
  • Uncertainty and expenseThe move can be preceded by a prolonged period of uncertainty and expense, with plans that change every minute.
  • Time to settle inIt can take several months to feel at home in your new place.

Here are some quick tips so you can prepare for moving house:

  • Notify relevant bodies: Let your bank, insurance company, and other relevant bodies know about your change of address in advance.
  • Read meter readings: Take photos of the electricity, gas, and water meters, and report the readings to the utility companies.
  • Redirect your mail: Set up mail redirection to avoid missing important letters, bills, or documents.
  • Give yourself plenty of time: If you are packing your own goods, give yourself plenty of time. Most people underestimate the amount of time it actually takes to pack items into boxes.
  • Pack an essentials box: Pack a box with everything you need for the first day in your new home, such as a toothbrush, pajamas, chargers, coffee, and a change of clothes.
